Richmond Branch

Richmond Jamia Masjid was the first purpose-built mosque in British Columbia. The land was purchased in 1973 for $122,000 and was paid off in full the following year. The project officially kicked off on February 26, 1978, one month after obtaining the special land use permit from the City of Richmond. The first order of business for the new Mosque Project Committee was to appoint an architect, so a formal Request for Proposal was submitted to various local architects as well as to various Muslim organizations across Canada. Alexander Resanovic was ultimately selected as the successful architect to design BC's very first purpose-built mosque, which was completed in 1983 – five years after the project had initially commenced.

Today it is the heart and soul of the Richmond Muslim community, serving a congregation of approximately 3,000 local residents. The mosque is managed and operated by the Richmond Branch of the BC Muslim Association. The BC Muslim School is also located at this site, immediately south of the mosque building, along with the BCMA's head office and funeral office.
