Charitable Donations
Donation made to registered charities are eligible for a tax credit that reduces the taxes you have to pay. Without exception, donation may be claimed only after they are paid. Pledges do not count. Unused claims may be carried forward for five years and donations made in the year of death may be carried back one year. The general annual limit on charitable donations as a percentage of net income is now 75% of net income. However, the limit on gifts by individuals in the year of death (and prior year) is 100%.
The federal tax credit is 16% on the first $200 of donation claimed in the year, and 29% on the amount in excess of $200. After factoring in the provincial tax savings, donations in excess of $200 will save you anywhere from 39% to just under 49% (depending on your province of residence).
Planned Giving - Choosing the right Planned Giving Options
As part of your long-term financial planning, a planned gift can offer you substantial tax and estate planning benefits and allow you to make a larger and more lasting gift to the B.C. Muslim Association. There are several ways you can plan to make gifts to the B.C. Muslim Association. The option(s) you choose depends on your unique circumstances and financial objectives.
Bequest
Make a gift of cash or property by including the B.C. Muslim Association as a beneficiary in your will. It’s one of the simplest Planned Giving options to arrange and it can significantly reduce the tax paid by your estate. If you want your estate to be handled according to your wishes, you should have a will. Without a Will, a public trustee decides on the disposition of your possessions.
Gift-in-kind
A gift-in-kind is a gift of property such as real estate, securities, artwork, jewelry or collectibles. After independent appraisals, the B.C. Muslim Association will issue you a tax receipt.
Endowment Fund
An endowment fund is a donation which is invested, with the earnings generated on the principal used to support the B.C. Muslim Association’s work. You can let, the B.C. Muslim Association decide where the earnings are most needed or designate an area. If you desire, your gift to the B.C. Muslim Association Endowment Fund can be named in your honour in recognition of your support. Or, you may choose to name your gift in memory of a special person.
Charitable Reminder Trust
Your gift of cash or other property is used to establish a trust. You receive the income from the trust, according to the terms set out when it is established, and a receipt for the remainder. The B.C. Muslim Association receives whatever remains in the trust after your death
